Unarmed Practice

  • Practice agile and nimble footwork using small steps, passing steps, triangle steps and pivot steps.
  • Work to stay balanced, upright in the chest, and bent in the knees.
  • Practice them in isolation, and combine them with your swordwork.
  • Practice movement in collar and elbow with a partner.

Small Practice

Approach your partner/prop and find their sword from out of measure. Respond to your partner’s attempts to evade your control by countering with cavatione and volta stabile. Finish your approach by striking with intention through their weapon.

  • Starting with an inside finding, responding to cavatione in the point. (10 reps)
  • Starting with an outside finding, responding to cavatione in the point. (10 reps)
  • Starting with an inside finding, responding to the opponent’s cavatione in the mezza. (10 reps)
  • Starting with an outside finding, responding to the opponent’s cavatione in the mezza. (10 reps)

Medium Practice

  • Small practice items, plus:
  • Complete all of the practice exercises in the DuelloTV Approaching Gioco Stretto, Stringere lesson.
  • Practice cavatione under the sword with an advancing step or lunge. Be sure to wait until the sword has found the new line before stepping. (10 reps clockwise, 10 reps counterclockwise)
  • Practice volta stabile from side to side with an advancing step or lunge. Be sure to wait until the sword has found the new line before stepping. (10 reps to the inside, 10 reps to the outside)
  • Practice mezza volta with an advancing step or lunge. Be sure to wait until the sword has found the new line before stepping. (10 reps to the inside, 10 reps to the outside)
  • Practice maintaining control while moving forward with angulated advancing steps. (10 reps angulating left, 10 reps angulating right)

Big Practice

  • Small and medium practice items, plus:
  • Keep working on practice items from previous weeks.
  • Practice turning the sword around the point, mezza, and forte. (2 minutes each)
  • Practice thrusting accuracy:
    • thrust while finding new lines (5 min)
    • thrust to small targets (5 min)
    • thrust against a moving target (5 min)
  • Cut and thrust through posta longa.
  • Practice cutting sottani against posta longa, and against your opponent’s downward movement toward posta longa.
  • Practice stringere in your free sparring at slow and full speeds. Observe how your partner responds (or make up responses for your sword prop). Work to consolidate or increase your advantage as they move to escape your control.
