Week 4
Topic: Fighting Shadows and Playing at Building. I really want to finish up my Masterclass in the next two weeks. Most of the struggle is time constraints and prioritizing. Last week was a wash with work stress, lack of sleep, and a lot of extra emotional labor needed for family. Also bought a car. I still got sword in hand 5 days but not much of a plan. This week I am gonna stick with a looser plan and thus not fail as hard. Mostly it is the time taken up by writing these posts that becomes a barrier more than doing the actual sword work. I have a weird block around starting to write that comes up when I have less resources.
Schedule:
Monday I have some time in the morning and evening, focus on playbuilding, working up a sweat and planning the week.
Tuesday attend Quintin’s class, do some cutting practice
Wednesday busy, minimal effort expected
Thursday Devon’s class, dancing in the evening
Friday Lots of time, submit some stuff
Weekend is fully booked with other stuff.
Plan: I want to record a bunch of play builds this week and submit a few for review
Contingency: I started the week by recording a bunch, so if I don’t do anything else this week I have already created something I can submit for both stretto and largo playbuilding. Always return to flow drill if all else fails.

Mar 23 Log
Did Quintin’s class today. We looked through deflections. Last times aha moment was the crossline step for thrusting. Today’s aha moment was getting to a double cut fendente via lifting the sword from Donna over the head pushing the pommel away from my face then cutting down from and extended finestra with false followed by a true. We explored all the cuts and their relationship to moving the pommel. How they all start from the same place and can go to the six cuts. Great class and lots of learning.
I have also started doing some heavy fighting training. I started setting up to put on my armor again, threw on the helmet again, got the feel of it all. I created a practice session for myself using the Seconds app (same app I use for all my training sessions. I am also trying to use Italian sword language to describe the various attacks (mostly mezzani, both false and true edge). Its a cool exercise and allows me to connect it to what I have been studying in the Masterclass.
Looking forward to more training tomorrow hopefully during the day but this week if feeling pretty good so far.

Did my movement routine, made my plan for the week. Gonna post some practice playbuilds and then try to describe what I did in words.

1: Begins in Posta Di Donna
2: Begins in Posta Di Donna
1: Mandritto Fendente with an advancing step
2: retreat, yield with a crossline pass and reverso fendente to the opponent’s arms
1: fade to dente di ciangiara mezzana to avoid the blow, reverso sottano to attack
2: Collect with an offline step, thrust to the opponent

Gioco Largo Playbuild
The playbuilding took 20 minutes to figure out. The editing together took 3 hours.

So the first thing I realized is that I once again didn’t actually do the assignment properly. I am terrible at actually doing assignments as stated and I often end up doing them my way. I will make another play build and record it also. I just found it interesting to record both sides and I couldn’t really conceptualize it without thinking about what the other person was gonna do. It just made the exchange a bit short so if necessary I can redo the exercise to make it longer.
I found the process quite challenging, as an exercise in visualization, especially as regards measure (like when would I need to take a retreating step, when could I fade to evade….
Anyway, I will not be troubled if this video does not count for the assessment due to not following the directions of the assignment properly. More than anything I just wanted to submit something and get out of my rut of the last few weeks where I wasn’t making progress on the MasterClass. Tomorrow I will try to fit in time to do a longer Gioco Largo or work on Gioco Stretto.

March 12
Did flow practice again outside. The rest of the day was eaten up with work and housework.
Hopefully can do a bit more over the weekend as this weekend feels consistent but a bit light.

March 11
Did Longsword class with Devon. Really enjoyed learning about feints and deception.
Had intended to do more but got co-opted into a project with Karen which took all evening.

March 10
Got in some time outside with the sword. Flow, thrusts, defense form practice.
Had a bad sleep last night and some digestion stuff I am dealing with today. Lots of work today so I am really glad I found time to get outside and connect with my sword practice.

As is typical of myself, I didn’t follow my training plan and just did my own thing. Cutting practice. I will try to make some time for some Defense form practice later. Looking forward to class as well.

March 9th continued
Rest of the day was great. I put together something for the Gioco Largo Playbuild and even if it doesn’t fulfill the requirements for the assignment (cause I did my own thing… Again 😂) I am really glad I made progress and submitted something.
At 7 we did class with Quintin and it was awesome again. Did a bunch of partner work with Karen. It felt great. Practiced parry, deflection, and collection (expelling). Awesome class and we both had fun.

Monday March 8th
Did Gioco Largo and Gioco Stretto forms outside in the sun. Did the Fundamental cuts form
Dances review
Movement workout:
I am working with some mild resistance to doing sword work today. Feeling like I have to force myself to do things, rather than enjoying them. I just want to finish the Masterclass at this point. Might need to schedule in a break or a change to rediscover my enthusiasm for training.

Victory Laps. I feel good about having attended the classes and got some renewal of enthusiasm from that (it was a good course correction for my lagging enthusiasm). I am glad I still managed to do sword in hand work 5 days of the week.
Course Corrections. I find that I get caught on the intellectual work such as writing out playbuilds, writing up the scholar’s assault to try to memorize the sequence and I lose a lot of momentum in these things. I really should be able to finish everything this week if I just put in a good few hours filming and working on these things but it is hard. I can just accept that I have not got the scholars assault memorized but do understand all the parts of it. I could just accept that Karen is not going to be able to be my partner for the playbuilds and just complete them nonetheless. I feel like I am holding myself back and like I should just let go. I am gonna try to book in some time next week (this week now) for writing up the playbuilds for stretto and largo. It is easy enough.
Aha Moments. I found the classes inspiring, they helped me get over the hump I was feeling.

Attended the German Longsword for Italians class. Practiced and recorded the form after class. Did a bunch of dance practice.
