Week 5:
Topic: Assaults, Forms and Historical Sources
Schedule: 3 days covering short, medium and big practice drills, 2 days completing Week 5 Masterclass module and creating a new playbuild for assessment
-
I had to adapt my Week 4 training plan to accommodate other commitments, so I didn’t get around to submitting a form assessment, but will aim to do so at the end of Week 5 instead.
I particularly enjoyed an exercise that formed a part of the Week 4 “Big Practice” plan and involved working slowly through the Twelve Poste Progression, holding each position for a minute before moving on.

Day 5 (Sunday): Worked the Quadrant Defences and Shadow Boxing practices from Week 5 of the Masterclass.
-
Day 4 (Saturday): Had to be out all day today, so just settled for going through the daily drill and the new solo playbuild lesson on DTV tonight.

Day 3 (Friday): Big Practice
-
Day 2 (Tuesday): Medium Practice

Day 1 (Monday): Short Practice

Week 4

Gioco Largo playbuild solo:
Got carried away and did a double tuta Volta mandritto fendente. Noticed that the blade is not fully horizontal on second mezzano.

Managed to film versions of the Giocco Stretto and Largo playbuilds from Week 4 of the Masterclass. Neither of them are quite right or fully conform to the briefs, but I’m still pretty happy with them.
Next week I’ll continue trying to get to stuff earlier in the week.
Aha moment this week was definitely attending the second half of Saturday’s Martial Movement seminar. I took part in the Sean Hayes, Jen Landels and Devon classes and learned a lot – although woke up today aching. Was only going to participate for an hour yesterday but was enjoying myself so much I couldn’t leave!

Day 5 (Sunday): Big Practice only (minus medium practice drills) + videoing stretto and largo playbuilds.
-
Gioco Largo Playbuild:
1. Start in posta di donna. Parry to left with shuffle back, then cut with pass forward.
2. Tuta Volta into second mandritto fendente ending in dente di cinghiara.
3. Ribbon cut to right with triangle step.
4. False edge sottano from right followed by true edge sottano with triangle step.
5. Volta stabile into right finestre guard.
6. Mezza Volta into right mezzano half cut with passing step forward.
7. Mezza Volta into left mezzano half cut with triangle step.
8. Mandritto fendente with triangle step.
This was a really fun one. Watching this on slow, I noticed that I look pigeon-toed on the change between stances. I also think I included too many triangle steps – using more offline and crossline passes might have made things more interesting.

Gioco Stretto Playbuild with partner:
Move 2 changed. Instead of tuta Volta did more of a Mezza Volta to make second parry.
