Week 2
Topic: Posta di donna
Plan: Cover big, medium and short practice assignments, attend at least one class and focus on sparring in partner practice
Contingency: Short practice
-
Week 1 Reflection: it was sometimes quite uncomfortable to train in the heat, but I did manage to meet my targets. I need to build in more partner/dummy practice next week, which should help me adjust to practising sword in more dynamic environments than I’ve been used to for the last while. It was useful to see great examples of sparring at the weekend.

Day 4 (Saturday): longsword class working on moves from the 12 poste progression and scholars assault.
-
Day 2 (Wednesday): longsword class focussing on 12 poste progression with 10 mins of sparring at the end. Nic started doing the form backwards in class which was a fun challenge. I realized I have no sparring skills, having only ever sparred in two longsword fundamentals classes before now. All of my attention immediately went to sticking to speed and calling out “hit” what felt like every 2 seconds. Nic and I have resolved to practice sparring together.

Week 5
I’ve been off the forum for a couple of weeks and then returned to the heartbreaking news about David. I am going to sorely miss all his insights, questions and candour, but am very glad of the chance to have known him. He will certainly be remembered.
I’ve been following my normal routine of spending three days working through the Short, Medium and Big practice assignments and two attending classes and working towards assessments. I’m looking forward to touching on all the forms this week, but will probably avoid the BIG BIG practice which would involve me re-learning the Scholar’s Assault for about the third time. I seem to only have a short-term memory for that one.

@jeremy.overbay your version of my playbuild looks great! I particularly like how clean that double sottano looks. I meant the first mandritto to be more of a feint that doesn’t get finished, but it’s interesting to see what you did with that instruction. Here’s my version for comparison.

@jeremy.overbay I enjoyed learning and practising this playbuild. Not sure I got the last half cut reverso fendente right though as I basically just dropped into it from fenestre – be interested to see your version!

Day 5 (Fri): Nic and I had a longsword class with Ben reviewing the 12 Poste Progression. Was great to receive some in-person pointers and to be in a space where we could swing our swords free from the worry of imminent furniture annihilation.

Day 4 (Thurs): class with Devon, working on feints
