Gaining with Straight and Angled Lines – Practice
Immediate Practice
5 minutes – Finding and gaining with the angled line. 10 times on the inside and outside.
- Have your partner stand in posta longa. Find the three advantages by forming an angle over their sword, stepping just offline (as shown). Proceeding into posta finestra to strike.
- Ensure that you acquire the three advantages before you step into measure.
- Turn your hands fully to gain in finestra with the arms fully extended up and forward before stepping in to deliver your final thrust.
- Have your partner test your advantages by trying to bring their sword on-line while you thrust.
5 minutes – Finding and gaining with the straight line. 10 times on the inside and outside.
- From the same starting position, push your opponent’s sword into an angle, acquiring the three advantages as you do so. Proceed forward with a thrust in posta longa.
- Ensure that you acquire the three advantages before you step into measure.
- Extend your arms from posta breve into posta longa before you take your final step to strike.
- Have your partner test your advantages by trying to bring their sword on-line while you thrust.
5 minutes – Switching between the angled and straight line.
- Alternate between the inside and the outside and between angled and straight line approaches.
- Ensure you maintain good order throughout the exercise.
- Have your partner periodically test your position to ensure you have and maintain the three advantages.
