Responding to Line Change – Practice

Immediate Practice

10 minutes – Review responses to cavatione and movement at each measure on both the inside and outside.

  • At Larghissima:
    • Cavatione while moving forward: Contra-cavatione and strike with a lunge or pass in primo tempo.
    • Cavatione while staying still: Contra-cavatione and advance to larga.
    • Cavatione while moving back: Contra-cavatione and pursue or let them go.
  • At Larga:
    • Cavatione while moving forward: Maintain control with a volta stabile and strike with a lunge or firm-footed in controtempo.
    • Cavatione while staying still: Maintain control with a volta stabile and step to misura stretta.
    • Cavatione while moving back: Maintain control with a volta stabile and pursue.
  • At Stretta:
    • Cavatione while moving forward: Maintain control with a volta stabile and strike firm-footed in mezzo tempo.
    • Cavatione while staying still: Maintain control with a volta stabile and strike firm-footed in mezzo tempo.
    • Cavatione while moving backward: Maintain control with a volta stabile and strike with a lunge or passing step.

Ongoing Practice

  • Bring together movement, pressure, and cavatione cues into a single tactical exercise.
  • Practice responding to cues at each measure. I.e. begin an exercise at misura larga and practice responding to the possible cues at that measure. Reset after each cue.
  • Practice limiting which cues are available to your partner. Limiting cues allows you to focus on conditioning of particular actions without overwhelming your brain. Get really good at a small number of cues, then add more.
