      Day 1

An hour of working on the assalti and shoulder stability.

Nice and relaxed and enjoyable on a bit of a slow day.

Listened to a book while I did it.

@daniel.kline I like that you extracted this from that vid!

In the curricular version of this I just move through the poste with no demonstrations of the functions of each posta. I like that you incorporated some of the actions I demonstrated and retained them.

@steve.frey What you attended classes for was the armoured assalto that goes through the guards in this same order but works through their core actions in a combative sequence.

Maybe you can shoot that up and share it. 🙂

      Week 4 Reflection

Victory Laps: Doing some of my working out this week with my partner Anneka. And, making some big improvements in the position and engagement of my left shoulder and the left side of my back.

Course Corrections: More practice with Anneka and the steel mace.

Aha Moments: Allowing myself some time to just play with the sword some. It’s easy in solo-only training to forget about giving yourself some just pure enjoyment time.

      Day 6 and 7

I had a really superb time this weekend focusing on just enjoying moving with the sword. In particular on Saturday I spent an hour doing movement exercises with sword and buckler and longsword.

I moved between shadow boxing and flow. Put on some music and just moved joyfully with the weapon. It was a real pleasure and kept me far more occupied than I had anticipated.

On Sunday I spent time working on parry exercises that I have often worked with parnters but enjoyed working them with a focus on visualization, combinations of multiple parries, and efficient counter-attack. About 30 minutes today plus some additional walk-by-pick-up-my-sword-mess-around-for-a-bit-then-continue-about-my-day sessions.

Now about to shoot a couple vids both as drill resources and self-review.

      Day 5!

An hour of sidesword with my students focused on clearing and reentry. Super great topic and I’m excited to teach a workshop on it in March!

May yet go for a run this evening.

      Day 4

Class day today, so lots of practice along with my students.

1 hour of longsword – 10 minutes of flow warm-up, then 20 minutes focusing on the breaking of the thrust, 20 minutes on deflections and clearing actions and 10 minutes of contextual actions.

1 hour of rapier – 10 minutes warm-up, 20 minutes review of reverse lunge in various forms, then 30 minutes of work on the passatta sotto and sbasso. Great thigh and back workout.

      Day 3

I overdid it yesterday and worked too late. Meant a bit more of a recuperative start today.

Made my way into the training room and started with light work with two sticks doing sword and stick patterns for 10 minutes. Then let that morph into an hour long session with stick and buckler, sword and buckler, and longsword.

My primary focus was shoulder movement and back engagement on my left side. Made some really good proprioceptive progress today in correcting a few important movements. It was a really great session.

In the afternoon I went for a 40 minute run.

Felt really good and easier than Monday which was a bit of a slog!

      Day 2

      Hit the morning training plan.

      First set

      – Steel mace flow

      – Steel mace 360-swings

      – Steel mace arm lift with pull away from centre

      – Squats

      – Giant strides

      Second set

      – Sidesword alone assalti patterns with both arms

      – Sidesword and buckler with focus on correction of buckler arm shoulder position.

      Third set

      – Self defense techniques with my partner. Focused on having her practice breaking wrist holds, making a wrist lock, and conducting the first defense against being grabbed from behind.

      Later

I’ll be doing a couple hours of longsword later this afternoon shooting more exemplar videos.

      Day 1

Did 45 minutes with Anneka. Worked on Steel Mace for 15 minutes with squats and lunges. 15 minutes of flow and alternating with some rapier voids exercises. 15 minutes of steel mace and flow exercises alternating.

For fun we took turns choosing cheesy 80s workout songs. Google home has some uses.

Out for an hour run now.

    Week 3 Reflection

Victory Laps: The big Victory Laps this week were 1. Getting in three really fulfilling runs. I upped my overall time running and made it into my week 6 program on my training. 2. Got out to the lake to shoot a flow video. I want to be putting up some performance and practice videos every week, separate from the lesson videos I create. More examples of form in action are great to be making.

Course Corrections: Next week I’d like to involve my partner in my morning training sessions. It means getting to bed together at a more consistent time. She needs a bit more consistency in her sleeping rhythms than I do. So I’ll be heading to sleep by 11 every night this week so we can get up and train together.

Aha Moments: Taking pauses in my day to move — with a sword or in dance — made a big difference in my sense of presence to the day. I have a desire to savour time more and soulful connection with my body is quite impactful in that regard. More of that next week.

Feb 26/21 at 7:51 pm in reply to: Assessments Week 3: Karen Meijer-Kline

@karen.meijer-kline you are really coming along in this! The fluidity of motion, depth of stance, and the engagement of your body in the cuts is really great. Bravo!

Couple things to aim you at:

    1. In the third pair of actions (from posta di donna, clearing through posta finestra) you want to let the tip drop significantly more so that you are deflecting upwards (they’re coming more horizontal or downward right now).

    2. In the first ribbon cut (the very first defense from the sword being low) make sure you’re aiming higher as you life the sword — its a deflection aiming to knock away a mandritto fendente coming at your head.

    3. You’re right about that last breaking, what might help you is letting your hands come much farther to the right side of your body. You’re going into porta di ferro with the true edge up.

    Nice work!

Feb 25/21 at 10:07 pm in reply to: Tempo Identification (LS3)

This is good questioning @karen.meijer-kline . For something to be in contro-tempo your counter-attack must be equal to or lesser in length to the initial attack. The opponent should feel like they’re about to finish their attack and get struck instead.

A parry repost in due tempi takes place as so:

    1. Side A Attacks, and Side B Parries.

    2. Side A Recovers, and Side B Strikes during that recovery.

Even if Side A just stands there instead of recovering, if they weren’t hit in tempo 1 but were instead hit in tempo 2, it’s due tempi.

Now in some cases someone is attempting contro tempo but takes a bit too long to hit, it still doesn’t make it contro tempo but it is an attempt at contro tempo. 🙂
