Training day 4
25 minutes of sidesword movement. Bit more of a movement meditation today.
Hour of longsword flow and breaking the thrust for noon class.
Hour of rapier voids. My thighs are very sore now.

Training Day 5!
Got out in the sunshine this morning and worked through Marozzo’s first assault right and left handed with sword alone and sword and buckler for about 30 minutes.
Then did an hour of sidesword drills with my students in the noon class. Working on counter-cuts and clearing cuts.
Continued emphasis on back engagement. Been a continual payoff.
If the weather is good this weekend I’ll get out and shoot another vid of the assault. If the weather is bad I’ll be inside doing the Week 3 training plan.

Training Day 6
Today did about 20 minutes of two sword, then went out to Lake Padden near my home for a 40 minute run and a bit of longsword flow down on the dock. Shot it for my video for week 3:

Training Day 7
Got down into the training room first thing this morning with a focus on flow. Worked through single handed and two handed flow exercises with a focus on back engagement and precision.
Enjoyed using the indoor trainer and also explored its advantages and limitations.
It was a nice final session for the week that I followed up with a short meditation.

Hey @bob.randolph great to see you training. You hopped in before we even had everything finished here!
Have you created a Focus for the week from the guidance in the February module? Check it out in Courses and share it here.

Tuesday
45 minutes of performance practice on Marozzo’s first assault. Working on shoulder stability with my left shoulder. Also working on slow and fast performances. Here are two vid clips both rough but useful to shoot.
Runthrough
Slow and deliberate, bit of a hiccup in part 7 as I navigate my space.

Wednesday
Short program in its old long form. Then modified it a bit for future victims to live up to its promise more. 🙂
To that I added half the medium program.
One thing I like to do when presented with several activities in a row that have multiple sets, eg
– 3 sets of 10 upward X
– 3 sets of 10 fendente to centreline
– 3 sets of 10 lunges
I alternate my sets. So I do 10 upward X, then 10 fendente, then 10 lunges. Then back to the start of that again. I usually don’t need a whole body rest between sets so that’s a nice way to give me a mental and targetted rest and move through all the exercises in a more engaging and quick way.

Monday – Bit of a later start (its a holiday here).
20 minutes of practicing Masterclass forms:
– Cutting form
– Thrusting form
– Gioco Stretto Defense
– Gioco Largo Defense
– 12 Poste Progression but right and left lead.
20 minutes of practicing Marozzo assault with a focus on parts 4-7
– Practiced sword alone and with buckler
– Practiced right and left handed. Left handed with buckler is still rougher than I want.

Added a run to my Monday practice. I’ve been working my way toward 10k. My running days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Congrats Daniel! Nice job on getting this done! You hit all the pieces, you’ve got the form. You’re signed off. Now here are your notes for continuing to refine it (feedback is given in the order of the form):
Loved seeing you get lower and bend the knees at the outset of the form!
0:21 – Part of the secret of getting the sword over the head in the roverso is simply angling the body and lifting the hands. Not as much head tilting is needed.
0:29 – Find more upward angle in the rising deflection from donna.
Nice job on the crossline pass! Good body orientation, nicely placed step.
0:38 – The fourth action should cut all the way down. It’s essentially just a downward X.
0:44 – Ribbon cuts are good, especially the one from cinghiaro
0:52 – After the ribbon cuts, the next defenses could be more downward. You’re actually repeating the very first defenses from the form, just starting from the low guards instead of the high guards.
1:01 – You did a really nice job of getting up into Finestra for the deflections here. Especially crossed arms finestra. The returning cuts are well delivered as well, smooth and on good lines.
1:15 – The breakings here could have their footwork break the centreline but angle back toward the opponent more clearly. the first breaking sword work is great, the second could have a bit more downward, you’re kind hooking over — we covered this in class on Thursday so I won’t get into it more here, I saw you doing then what is needed and so I’m confident you’ll bring that into future versions of this form.
Nice work sticking with it Daniel! Your persistence is paying off.

Hey @Gladius55
Go to the Training Discussions here:
https://swordplaymasterclass.com/forums/forum/masters-club/training-log/february-2021/
Then click New Discussion in the upper right. That will start your own thread.
Then from there you can put in your weekly training plan and your daily log.
I recommend bookmarking your own thread as well for easy finding.

Hmm.. I think @thomas.belloma is going for something different here. The dummy does not appear to be in the process of attacking or presenting threat in that moment… though it may be about too…

Give us a little more info Jeremy. What’s your opponent doing at the moment of your strike there? Are they stepping into measure, or is that the beginning of an attack on their part? Or are they simply still?

Hey Jeremy,
Nice work on the form you hit all the pieces. The form is complete and I’ve signed it off. I agree with you about getting lower, and finding the angles more. Watch the foundation video again and then use your sword dummy to find the same angles in each of the defenses that I’m finding with Ben.
Now I’m going to challenge you to refine a bunch of specific elements:
Bring your posta di donna so your hands are not in front of your body, but are highger, at the height of your chest/shoulders and beside your head. You want to make sure you are not making them an easy target for your opponent.
Make sure all your parries (beginning to 0:25) are done into posta breve instead of longa, Keeping the weapon tighter to the body makes your defense shorter (not as big a circle), stronger (closer to your core and a shorter lever), and allows you to extend your arms for a fast counter-attack
The deflections from donna into finestra are coming along. Make them tighter so the hands are never lower than your shoulders, the point drops down and sweets up, but the hands never drop, only rise.
0:38 make your frontales higher when collecting. This action is guiding the opponent’s attack into your crossbar, make sure it’s not your head too. Make the counter-attacks in finestra (like you are doing later at :58). This protects the head and hands much more.
0:58 when parrying from porta di ferro into frontale, make sure you bring the point across to your left leg, then left the sword up so it raises in front of your body like raising a venetian blind. This way you’ll be coming up underneath a downward attack and not risking missing the parry.
Your move up from cinghiaro (1:04) is much closer to what I’m talking about. These finestras are excellent for the thrusts btw.I feel like you’re someone who will appreciate being able to go through and refine each section so I gave you lots to work on.

Hey Karen, saw this post and wanted to reach out. When you’re not feeling up to it healthwise it can feel like a double whammy. Not only do you feel the effects of dealing with your health challenges you also feel the disappointment of what they keep you away from. I’ve been there quite a few times, I feel that pain.
Just wanted you to know you’re not in the suck alone. Good work keeping with things even just a little bit.
